Chinatown

Chinatown is an absolutely fantastic film you simply must rent from lovefilm.com/30freedays. Directed by the wonderful Roman Polanski, it is an American neo-noir film starring Jack Nicholson, John Huston, and Faye Dunaway. Released in 1974, the film is set in 1937 Los Angeles and is based on the conflict over land and water rights that raged in 1910’s and 1920’s southern California. During these disputes, a certain William Mulholland acted on behalf of Los Angeles to secure water rights in the Owens Valley.

The film portrays the manipulation of the critical municipal resource of water by a group of shady oligarchs. The story has a constant theme, that of the subjugation of public good by private greed. The script by Robert Towne won him an Oscar and the film is widely recognised to be the best of Jack Nicholson’s career. Towne was initially asked to make a film adaptation out of The Great Gatsby but felt he could not better the book. Instead he wrote his own script and look at the result!

War of Spanish Succession

Charles II was evidently the result of generations of Habsburg inbreeding and as a result rather mentally unstable. In one of his last official acts before he died, he decreed that the Spanish Crown pass to his nephew Philip of Anjou, the Bourbon heir to the French throne. Upon hearing that his grandson was now King of Spain, King Louis XIV of France declares, “The Pyrenees are no more”.

Yet there was another claimant to the throne, Archduke Charles of Austria, who was supported by England and Netherlands as a means of preventing France and Spain becoming too powerful in a union. Austria went to war with France over the issue after France rejected a plan to maintain Spain and France parted, the War of Spanish Succession commenced. Glad gu10 led bulbs weren’t caught up in it! The Spanish population were divided on the issue which sparked a civil war in Spain. Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia favoured Archduke Charles as the regions feared Philip of Anjou would decreased the considerable autonomy they enjoyed from Madrid.

Skinny Jeans for the Not so Skinny

How annoying is it when you see pictures of celebs strolling though London or LA in a nice pair of skinny jeans looking hot!

Skinny jeans, I swear, are the bane of every girl’s life! They always look amazing on the models but when you get them yourself they just don’t feel amazing.

Now, I know that summer is coming up and you must be thinking well we don’t really care about jeans as it will be too hot for them.

HOWEVER, with our British summers I think it is important that every girl has a decent pair of ‘summer’ jeans that you can team with a nice summer top and sparkly sandals and look stunning!

You must remember though when shopping for jeans that there is a huge variety of women’s jeans and styles which suit everyone.

If you want skinny jeans you don’t always have to buy the ones with the ‘skinny’ label on. You can opt for the straight leg and still get that same look.

I think this is a good option if you are stick thin but still want to wear the look. If you get a pair that stick too much to your legs it will make them look bigger and will be uncomfortable.

Hampstead Heath

How true is this saying, "Anyone who is tired of seeing London is tired of life"?
Despite being a resident of London, there are so many places that I am yet to see, and much more that I would love visiting over and over.
I was a little surprised on my recent, first-time visit to the Hampstead Heath park located a few miles north of central London. So easy was it to forget that I was just some miles away from the central London with all its hustle-bustle. The tranquillity was too inviting.
Charming glades of woodlands and magical meadows spotted with magnificent ancient trees, little ponds and valleys is what the heath is all about. I would say that the park is one of the best I have ever been to, and it is surprisingly within reach.
The place is ideal for or a casual relaxing picnic or a romantic day out. The park is rich in fauna, and when the day ends you can watch the sun set over the city.
